Ikigai (生き甲斐) is a Japanese concept that roughly translates to “a reason for being” or “a reason to live.” It is a term that represents the intersection of four fundamental elements in life, leading to a sense of purpose and fulfillment. These four elements are:
1. Passion (情熱, Jōnetsu)
Ikigai starts with doing something you are deeply passionate about. It involves engaging in activities that spark joy, enthusiasm, and a strong sense of interest.

Jōnetsu (情熱) is a Japanese term that translates to “passion” or “enthusiasm” in English. It refers to a strong and intense emotion or fervor towards something or someone. When a person has jōnetsu for a particular activity, cause, hobby, or goal, they are deeply driven and motivated to pursue it with dedication and energy.
Jōnetsu is a fundamental element in the concept of Ikigai, where it represents one of the four components that lead to a sense of purpose and fulfillment in life. It signifies finding and engaging in activities that bring joy and ignite a fire within the individual. This passion can be anything from creative pursuits like art, music, or writing, to sports, hobbies, social causes, or even career-related interests.
Having jōnetsu for something can significantly impact a person’s life, as it drives them to overcome obstacles and persist in their endeavors. It gives a sense of meaning and enthusiasm, making life more fulfilling and rewarding. Discovering and nurturing one’s jōnetsu is an essential step in the journey to finding their Ikigai – the reason for being.
2. Mission (使命, Shimei)
Finding your mission means identifying what you are good at, something that you excel in, and that brings value to others or the world.
Shimei (使命) is a Japanese term that translates to “mission” or “purpose” in English. It is one of the key elements in the concept of Ikigai, which represents a reason for being or a reason to live a fulfilling life.
Shimei refers to the idea of finding a personal mission or calling in life, something that gives a sense of direction and meaning. It involves identifying activities or endeavors that align with one’s talents, skills, and values while also making a positive impact on others or the world at large. When a person discovers their shimei, they feel a deep sense of fulfillment and satisfaction, as they are actively contributing to something greater than themselves.
In the context of Ikigai, shimei complements passion (jōnetsu) to form a strong foundation for a purposeful and contented life. It is the quest to find what one is truly good at and what they can offer to the world, leading to a sense of purpose and fulfillment in their actions and choices.
Finding and pursuing one’s shimei can lead to a life of greater meaning and happiness, as it involves living in accordance with one’s values and making a positive impact on others, which are often important aspects of a fulfilling existence.
3. Vocation (職, Shoku)
This element involves finding a profession or job that not only pays the bills but also aligns with your passions and mission in life.
Shoku (職) is a Japanese term that translates to “vocation” or “occupation” in English. It is one of the elements in the concept of Ikigai, which represents a reason for being or a reason to live a fulfilling life.
Shoku refers to finding and engaging in a profession or job that aligns with one’s passions (jōnetsu) and mission (shimei). It is the practical aspect of Ikigai, where an individual seeks a career or work that not only provides a means of livelihood but also brings a sense of fulfillment and purpose.
When someone discovers their shoku, they are not only pursuing a job to make a living but also choosing a vocation that resonates with their interests and values. This alignment between personal passion, mission, and occupation creates a sense of harmony and contentment, leading to a more fulfilling and satisfying life.
For example, someone who is passionate about environmental causes (jōnetsu) and has a mission to protect the planet (shimei) might find their shoku in a career related to environmental conservation or sustainability. In such a case, their work becomes an extension of their values and interests, making it more meaningful and rewarding.
Finding the right shoku is an essential aspect of discovering one’s Ikigai, as it plays a crucial role in shaping a purpose-driven and meaningful life. It involves identifying career paths or occupations that resonate with the individual’s passions and allow them to contribute positively to society or their community.
4. Profession (業, Gyō)
This element represents the practical aspect of Ikigai, the activities that you are skilled at and can earn a living from.
Gyō (業) is a Japanese term that translates to “profession” or “craft” in English. It is one of the elements in the concept of Ikigai, which represents a reason for being or a reason to live a fulfilling life.
Gyō refers to the specific activities or tasks in which a person is skilled, experienced, or trained. It represents the practical, day-to-day work that individuals engage in to make a living and support themselves. While Gyō is related to the concept of shoku (vocation), it specifically focuses on the skills and expertise a person possesses rather than the broader idea of a chosen career.
In the context of Ikigai, Gyō complements the other elements (jōnetsu, shimei, and shoku) to form a well-rounded sense of purpose and fulfillment. When someone is skilled and proficient in their Gyō, they can find satisfaction and a sense of achievement through their work, regardless of whether it aligns perfectly with their passions or personal mission.
For example, a person may have a passion for music (jōnetsu) and a mission to uplift and inspire others through art (shimei). While their ideal vocation (shoku) might be to become a full-time musician, their current profession (Gyō) could be teaching music or working in a related field to utilize their musical skills and expertise.
Discovering and developing one’s Gyō is an important aspect of the journey towards Ikigai. It involves recognizing and honing the talents and abilities one possesses, which can contribute to a fulfilling and purposeful life, even if it may not directly align with their ultimate passions or long-term aspirations.
Jōnetsu + Shimei + Shoku + Gyō
When these four elements intersect, a person is said to have discovered their Ikigai – a sense of purpose and fulfillment that can lead to a more meaningful and contented life. Ikigai is often seen as a holistic approach to finding happiness and satisfaction, encouraging individuals to identify and pursue activities that are meaningful to them.
Ikigai is deeply rooted in Japanese culture and has become a well-known concept worldwide due to its association with longevity and well-being. It is often considered a key factor in the exceptional longevity of the residents of Okinawa, Japan, one of the world’s “Blue Zones” – regions known for having a high number of centenarians and healthy, active elderly populations.
