A couple of days ago, we talked about a commenter (here) who believed that the rich are rich and get richer because they come from wealthy families and backgrounds. Perhaps no one better than Elon Musk can prove that such a mentality is wrong. There was a time in his life when he was homeless, lived and slept in his office with his brother, and had to go to the YMCA to take a shower. Now, they say he is on track to become the world’s first trillionaire by 2027, or maybe even earlier. He has managed to reach his current status not in 100 or even 50 years, but in just about 25 years, which is another exceptional thing about him.

Elon Musk’s fortune, skyrocketing at an astounding annual growth rate of 110%, is primarily driven by his significant investments in Tesla, SpaceX, and his recent acquisition of X (formerly known as Twitter). With a staggering net worth of $241 billion, Musk currently sits atop the global wealth leaderboard. Although competitors like Jeff Bezos and Jensen Huang are also vying for the coveted trillionaire title, Musk’s diverse business empire gives him a clear edge in the race.

Elon Musk’s journey to success wasn’t easy. In fact, it was likely even more challenging for him than for other billionaires, as the problems and obstacles he faced may be unlike those encountered by any other billionaire.

Elon Musk has faced numerous significant challenges, setbacks, and disasters throughout his career. Here are some of the most notable:

1. Zip2 Struggles and Sale (1996-1999)

Musk’s first startup, Zip2, struggled to gain traction initially. After years of hard work, it was sold to Compaq in 1999 for $307 million, but Musk was sidelined from the company’s operations by investors.

2. PayPal Founding and Ouster (1999-2000)

Musk co-founded X.com, which later became PayPal. He faced internal disputes with the board and was eventually ousted as CEO while on vacation in 2000. Despite this, PayPal was later sold to eBay for $1.5 billion, but Musk’s removal from leadership was a major personal blow.

3. SpaceX Early Failures and Near Bankruptcy (2002-2008)

SpaceX, founded in 2002, faced repeated failures with its early Falcon 1 rocket launches. The first three launches (2006, 2007, 2008) were unsuccessful, nearly bankrupting the company. In 2008, SpaceX was down to its last attempt before a successful launch secured a NASA contract and saved the company.

4. Tesla Near Bankruptcy and Production Hell (2008, 2017-2019)

Tesla struggled financially in its early years, nearly going bankrupt during the 2008 financial crisis. Musk had to invest his own money to keep it afloat.

During 2017-2019, Tesla faced “production hell” with the Model 3. Delays, quality control issues, and high manufacturing costs threatened Tesla’s future. Musk famously slept in the factory to oversee production.

5. SolarCity Acquisition and Controversy (2016)

Musk pushed for Tesla to acquire SolarCity, a solar energy company founded by his cousins and chaired by Musk himself. Critics saw the $2.6 billion deal as a conflict of interest, and Tesla faced lawsuits from shareholders who argued the acquisition was financially irresponsible. SolarCity’s financial troubles also impacted Tesla.

6. Model X Delays and Complications (2015)

The Tesla Model X was delayed multiple times due to its complex design and technical issues with features like the falcon-wing doors. These delays strained Tesla financially and dented customer confidence.

Tesla’s Gigafactories faced numerous challenges, including labor issues, construction delays, and production bottlenecks. The scale of these factories made setbacks costly and time-consuming to fix, with the Nevada and Shanghai plants facing particularly difficult ramp-ups.

11. Public Scrutiny and Personal Struggles (2018)

Musk has faced significant personal scrutiny, particularly after controversial behavior in 2018, including his erratic tweets, smoking marijuana on a live podcast, and his “pedo guy” comment against a British cave rescuer, which resulted in a defamation lawsuit (though Musk was not found liable).

12. Neuralink and Regulatory Hurdles (2020-Present)

Musk’s brain-computer interface company, Neuralink, has faced delays in securing regulatory approval for human trials. Additionally, there have been reports of internal turmoil and challenges with the complex technology it is developing.

Tesla’s Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (FSD) systems have been under intense scrutiny following multiple crashes, some fatal, involving cars operating in these modes. Regulatory investigations and lawsuits have followed, and Musk has repeatedly missed deadlines for delivering fully autonomous driving.

15. Hyperloop and The Boring Company Challenges (2017-Present)

Musk’s vision for Hyperloop and The Boring Company has faced significant technical and regulatory challenges. While some test tunnels have been completed, widespread adoption and commercial success of these technologies have been slow to materialize, with doubts growing over their feasibility.
