Over 31,000 people have been killed in the Turkey/Syria earthquake so far. Although the scientific and geological aspects of earthquakes are fully discovered and understood, still some people relate earthquakes to some other things like breaking the God’s rules. Do you agree with these people? Please explain. If you don’t agree with them, what do you have to tell them to enlighten them? Give a good answer and win 1,000,000 points. Thank you!
In general, earthquakes are caused by the sudden release of energy within the Earth’s lithosphere, which in turn causes seismic waves and ground shaking. While the vast majority of earthquakes are natural geological phenomena resulting from the movement of Earth’s tectonic plates along faults, it is important to note that other factors, including human activities and environmental changes, can also be involved.
Natural geological factors
The primary cause of earthquakes is the movement and interaction of tectonic plates, which are large slabs of the Earth’s crust constantly in motion due to convection currents in the underlying mantle. These plates can collide, pull apart, or slide past each other, building up stress along fault lines (fractures in the Earth’s crust). When this stress exceeds the strength of the rocks, a sudden slip occurs along the fault, releasing the accumulated energy as seismic waves, according to the British Geological Survey. This is explained by the elastic rebound theory.
Besides tectonic earthquakes, other natural geological factors can also cause earthquakes, such as:
Volcanic Activity: Earthquakes in volcanic regions are caused by the movement of magma and faults associated with volcanic activity.
Landslides: The sudden movement of large masses of rock and soil during landslides can also generate localized earthquakes.
Collapse Earthquakes: These occur due to the collapse of underground caverns and mines.
Other factors (including human-induced seismicity)
In addition to natural geological processes, human activities and environmental changes can also induce or influence earthquake activity:
Wastewater Injection: The disposal of wastewater, often from oil and gas operations, by injecting it into deep underground wells, can increase subsurface pore pressure and trigger movement along faults, leading to earthquakes. Research by the USGS suggests that a significant increase in earthquakes in Oklahoma since 2010 is linked to wastewater injection in deep disposal wells.
Dam Construction and Reservoirs: The weight of large reservoirs behind dams can alter in-situ stress and pore pressure along existing faults, causing earthquakes.
Mining: Both surface and underground mining operations can alter the stress state of surrounding rock, leading to seismic activity and rock bursts or collapses.
Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS): These systems, which involve injecting fluids to create or enhance permeability in hot dry rock, are associated with induced seismicity.
Hydraulic Fracturing (Fracking): While fracking itself is generally associated with smaller seismic events, it can induce earthquakes both directly and through the disposal of wastewater used in the process.
Groundwater Extraction: Large-scale extraction of groundwater can change crustal stress patterns and trigger earthquakes.
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS): The long-term injection of large volumes of carbon dioxide underground in CCS initiatives has the potential to induce seismic events by increasing pore pressures and changing reservoir stresses.
Nuclear Explosions: Underground nuclear explosions can also cause seismic activity, although the resulting seismic activity is generally less energetic than the initial blast.
After reading the causes of Earthquake my answer is that Earthquake can be both a man-made and natural disaster.
Some of the Man-made causes are:
- Dams and Reservoirs: It is history which has proved how large reservoirs of water created by dams have caused earthquakes. Examples include from Zambia to Greece to India. Example: – 2008 Sichuan, China earthquake- killed nearly 70,000 people. It is believed that it was triggered by the construction of the Zipping Dam nearby.
- Ground water extraction: For example: – 2011 Lorca earthquake. This 2011 earthquake in Lorca, Spain caused a huge amount of destruction for its 5.1 magnitudes as was recorded on the Richter scale.
- Geothermal power plants – Salton Sea Geothermal Field and the Geysers Geothermal Field: According to a 2011 study published, it was clear that researchers at the University of California had discovered that seismic activity had increased around the Salton Sea as geothermal field operations around the area had ramped up.
- Tracking and injection wells – 2011 Oklahoma:For example:- 2011 Oklahoma earthquake- A study had pointed out that Seismic activity in Oklahoma has shot up along with the rise of fracking.
- Big Sckycrapers :As a study points out, Taipei 101’s especially huge mass of 770,000 tons is presently putting too much pressure on the soft sedimentary rock below. It comes because of the extra steel and concrete which is being used to make the skyscraper solid enough to withstand earthquakes. Since construction began on the building of Taipei 101, the region began to receive several micro-earthquakes and even two larger earthquakes which went directly underneath the building.
Conclusion: I believe Earthquake is not 100% Natural and Geological Phenomenon but other factors are also involved as enumerated above.
As there is no solid evidence to suggest that earthquakes are a punishment from God for not obeying His rules or laws, I believe that they are a natural phenomenon. Scientific explanations based on observable evidence prove that earthquakes occur when tectonic plates in the Earth’s crust shift or break, which causes the ground to shake. I’m not a religious person, but if God is love, he wouldn’t inflict harm on innocent people.
- Without being disrespectful to those of faith, my understanding is that earthquakes are not caused because of man’s sin or his or her going against the words or law of their God. What about those who have no belief in your God? What about those, like children, who have not committed any type of wrong doing? The. Earthquake is/was a natural occurrence of nature. Why would God destroy his people? Why wouldn’t he stop the quake and save them? No, nature has the wheel and does as it does when certain elements are in or out of place.
My opinion is Earthquake are primarily a natural and geological phenomenon, caused by the movement of tectonics plates in the earth crust ,the most tectonics plates is around the pacific ocean like New Zealand and japan as an example. However human activities such as mining , drilling, and the construction of large dams can also cause earthquakes.
