The other night I had a very vivid dream. In my dream, I saw a far, far future generation of archaeologist digging up my grandmother’s grave in the cemetery. They claimed that this grave was chosen due to its large size, custom sculptured headstone. It seemed too elaborate for the time period given. They thought that she must have been someone who was very important.
I watched as they removed the cross necklace from around her neck, that I had placed there as a child at the time of her funeral. They said that they took it because it was made of gold and they thought it was valuable.
Is this now what is happening all around the world especially in Egypt? Long ago, archeologist were focused on knowledge, understanding, science, and historical validation. But in recent years, they seem to be more focused on fame and fortune. Sadly, they are selling the remains of the dead to museums, along with their departure gifts, and placing them on public display and charging admission for viewing. I feel that this is morally wrong. The dead deserve respect and should be allowed to rest in peace regardless of who they were in real life. The treasures belong to the dead not the living. What is your opinion?
One may be a genuine archeologist. But that doesn’t matter. They should be operating on a genuine license.
Thank you for your answer.
I totally agree with everything that you said regarding this matter, Carole. You said it all, in my opinion.
Thank you so much for your reply. Your opinion is appreciated.
So many gravestones have R.I.P. engraved on them. I think that those words are significant for all graves. Let them rest in peace!
You are right. Thank you for your answer.
Archaeology is glorified grave robbing! I can see the sense in research of ancient burial grounds, but knowing, in this time, that desecration of some sites is hugely disrespectful of the dead and any living relatives. Like you say Carole they have enough information now, there is no need to continue to desecrate these sites for the purpose of display to the world.
I truly appreciate your comment, Kevin. After my crazy dream, this issue has been constantly on my mind. I think that mankind has now lost all morals and values. Maybe the ancient Egyptians had some insight of what the future would be. This may be the reason that they placed all of the warnings and curses on some of the tombs. They wanted their ancestors to rest in peace undisturbed.
For me its grave robbing, leave the dead in peace.
Thank you Jorg for your answer. I totally agree with you. We now have enough data from many past years so it’s time to stop and move onward to other things and allow the dead to rest in peace.
Your dream raises an interesting point about the ethical considerations in archaeology. While archaeological practices have evolved over time, there are ongoing debates about the ethical treatment of human remains and artifacts. It’s crucial for archaeologists to balance the pursuit of knowledge with respect for the deceased and their cultural context. Your concerns about the commercialization of archaeological finds and the display of human remains in museums resonate with ethical debates in the field. Many argue for a more respectful and culturally sensitive approach to the handling of archaeological discoveries. It’s essential for the archaeological community to maintain a focus on preserving and understanding history without compromising the dignity of those who lived in the past. Striking a balance between scientific inquiry and ethical considerations is an ongoing challenge in the field of archaeology.
You have a great point, but will that balance ever be achieved? Let’s hope so. Thank you for your answer,
It’s a complex issue, and finding a balance between preserving history and respecting the deceased is a challenge. Here’s to hoping for thoughtful solutions in the future. You’re welcome!
Robbing the dead, in the name being an archeologist is a grave sin.
I totally agree. Yes, I can see the purpose of knowledge, and science studies, but only for a few times to gather data. But now they have gone to excessive limits and this is a sin.
I see both sides. Helping us to better understand history and how they lived. But, at the same time… people’s remains are sacred and should be left alone. I do believe we have enough artifacts, and we’ve learned so much! I don’t know why they keep going back for more.
I totally agree. There are so many more unsolved mysteries and discoveries waiting in this world to continue to disturb the dead especially for profit.
I believe the people who pass away should not be tampered with it doesn’t matter what they have on. Once they are put in the ground that is the final resting place and no one should be tampering with them. I mean who does that it’s sick.
I totally agree. Mankind has destroyed the earth, air, and water. Now we are disturbing the dead. No wonder this world is cursed. Thank you for your answer.
