Never Underestimate the Value of Small Efforts

In 1971, Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student at the time, created what would become one of the most iconic logos in the world—the Nike Swoosh. When she first presented the logo to Nike’s co-founder Phil Knight, she was paid just $35 for her work. Although this amount seemed modest, Davidson had no idea that her design would soon become synonymous with one of the largest and most successful athletic brands globally.

More than a decade later, in 1983, Phil Knight chose to show his appreciation for her contribution in a much more significant way. He gifted Davidson 500 shares of Nike stock, a gesture that recognized her pivotal role in shaping the brand’s identity. At the time, these shares were valued modestly, but their worth skyrocketed as Nike continued to expand and dominate the market.

Fast forward to 2024, and those 500 shares are now valued at approximately $3 million, a testament to Nike’s explosive growth and success. This remarkable increase in value highlights not only Nike’s triumph but also the long-term rewards that can come from early recognition of one’s work. Unlike Ron Wayne who sold his 10% stake in Apple for just $800 in 1976, and so he lost $320 billion, Davidson who still holds these shares, serves as an inspiring example of how a seemingly small initial payment can evolve into a life-changing fortune through patience, loyalty, and the right opportunities. Her story is a reminder that true value often emerges over time, and early contributions can lead to immense rewards when nurtured by growth and success.

Perhaps the biggest lesson in this story is to never underestimate the value of small efforts or a struggling start-up, because over time, they can transform into something incredible that no one could have ever imagined. It’s true that success is never guaranteed, and many small businesses, start-ups, and new brands will fail. However, could anyone have guaranteed that Nike, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, and other massive companies would definitely fail when they were just starting out and trying to get off the ground? Absolutely not! Those who trusted and contributed to their success are now the happy winners, as I’ve explained here.

I don’t like to use every opportunity to promote LuckScout, but it would be unfair to ignore the undeniable facts.
