How Much Will You Sacrifice and What Risks Are You Willing to Take to Achieve Success and Make Your Dreams Come True?

Today, I saw something that made me think deeply. It shocked me and, at the same time, made me feel ashamed when I realized how others sacrificed and took risks to keep their businesses running, to succeed, and to make their dreams come true. Yet, there have been times when I considered giving up on things when I encountered problems that could have been solved with persistence and resilience. Although I am still someone who doesn’t give up easily, I now understand that I need to do more, be braver, and fight until the very last second—no matter what it takes. Life is short and will end anyway, but you can choose to end it knowing that you never gave up or let yourself be defeated, or you can live it like a loser who preferred to stay on the safe side. I fear losing. I fear being defeated. But more than that, I fear living as a loser and a quitter.

What Did I See?

In the early days of FedEx, founder Fred Smith found himself in a desperate financial situation. The company was running on fumes, with just $5,000 left in the bank—nowhere near enough to cover critical expenses like fuel. After being turned down for a much-needed loan, Smith made a bold and unconventional decision. He took the company’s remaining funds and headed to Las Vegas, where he gambled at the blackjack table. In an incredible stroke of luck, he won $27,000, buying FedEx another week of operation.

While this daring move wasn’t a long-term fix, it gave Smith the breathing room and renewed determination to find proper financing. Not long after, he successfully raised $11 million, which allowed the company to stabilize and begin its path to growth. By 1976, FedEx reported its first profit of $3.6 million and soon went public.

Fast forward to today, and FedEx stands as a global giant in the delivery industry, with a market value of $65.18 billion as of October 14, 2024.

What Do We Learn from This?

1. Those who say that all successful people and the rich come from wealthy families with lots of financial support from their parents are 100% wrong. If Fred Smith had a rich father, he would have borrowed money from him, rather than going to Las Vegas to gamble at blackjack just to keep his company afloat. I’m not saying what he did was the right thing, but it was probably the last resort he had, even though I’m sure it didn’t seem like the best solution to him, and he likely wasn’t happy with it.

Relatives can offer support, but that doesn’t mean that if no one is around to help you, you have no chance. Your success depends on you, not on others—not even your family or parents. I’ve seen many people from wealthy families who received plenty of financial support, but it didn’t help them at all. Despite the resources, they ended up squandering their family’s wealth. As I’ve said, success comes from within you, not from external sources. If you are not prepared and dedicated to succeed, no amount of outside support can make it happen.

I recommend watching this video, which relates to the same idea explained above. It’s about a boy who couldn’t find anyone willing to support him. He realized that he either had to give up and live the rest of his life as a loser, or he had to stand on his own feet and forget about relying on others’ help.

2. You only win when you are 100% dedicated to success and are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. If you approach your goals half-heartedly, you won’t go far. Success requires full commitment, unwavering effort, and the mindset that nothing will stop you. You will achieve in direct proportion to the work and energy you invest—no more, no less. If you don’t give your absolute best and push yourself to your limits, the chances are high that you won’t achieve your goals. Mediocre effort leads to mediocre results, and success doesn’t come from doing the bare minimum. You have to be relentless in your pursuit, giving it your all from start to finish.

3. Success doesn’t come overnight. Those who chase instant success or immediate gratification should reconsider their ambitions if they aim to achieve something as great as financial freedom. Look at companies like FedEx and other successful individuals—they’ve worked tirelessly and relentlessly for decades. Along the way, they’ve faced numerous challenges, obstacles, and setbacks, but they never gave up. They pushed forward day after day, month after month, and year after year.

Even when they managed to get their businesses off the ground, become profitable, and start earning significant amounts of money, they didn’t stop. They knew that slowing down would mean falling behind. True success isn’t just about reaching the top—it’s about sustaining and continuing it. Without constant effort and dedication, success can quickly turn into failure. The journey to greatness is a long one, and those who are truly successful understand that persistence is key, even after achieving milestones. There’s always more to achieve, and resting too early is the fastest way to lose everything you’ve worked for.

FedEx was founded by Fred Smith in 1971. In 1976, the company reported its first profit of $3.6 million, a significant achievement at the time. Fred Smith could have easily retired with that profit, or after working a few more years, and lived the rest of his life in comfort and peace. But that profit didn’t make him stop. Instead, they continued to push forward even stronger, and that’s why FedEx is now a $65.18 billion company.

Now…

How much are you willing to sacrifice for your success? How far are you prepared to go? Fortunately, not everyone has to take the same risks that Fred Smith did. You don’t have to go that far these days. You just need to work harder every day and keep pushing forward.
