If you do not know directions of where you are going GPS can lead you there. I am sure it is safe. As long as you set it before you start your journey and not trying to setting it while already on the wheel as this can cause distraction and can even cause accidents

Following GPS is part of the driving test in the UK now, so you have to know how to use it safely to obtain your license!
It is very useful, much easier than reading the old A to Z map book everybody use to have in their vehicle.

Yes I think they are very safe when your driving you don’t need to touch anything you just keep your hands on the wheel and just listen to the directions. GPS are very safe in these days with better technology.
