Financial Freedom Isn’t Just About Wealth—It’s About Who You Become!

After decades of hard work, trial and error, failure and success, struggle and effort, shifting between hopefulness and hopelessness, and experiencing life’s ups and downs, you eventually come to this conclusion: nothing is more important than freedom and peace of mind in life—no matter how much you have.

Freedom and peace of mind are strongly linked. You cannot have peace of mind without freedom. And a big part of freedom is financial freedom, which is not just about being able to cover your needs effortlessly—it also brings many other great things into your life.

The most interesting thing about financial freedom is that you won’t be able to achieve it until you develop the special mindset it requires. And as you move closer to achieving it, financial freedom transforms you—it turns you into a different person. It’s not just about improving your financial situation. It is, in many ways, a never-ending journey of personal growth, developing mindfulness, and continuously building a better version of yourself.

This is where we must understand the difference between being rich and being financially free. That’s probably the first step toward true financial freedom. Many rich people are not financially free—and someone who is financially free may not be considered “rich” by society’s standards. A financially free person is someone who earns enough passive income to cover all their expenses and needs, while also saving enough to establish new passive income streams.

Passive income is the money that comes in without requiring your active work and effort. For example, income from rental properties or dividends from company shares is considered passive because you don’t need to work for it continuously.

Many wealthy individuals, on the other hand, are not financially free. Even though they live in luxury homes and drive expensive cars, their income often comes from a single source—usually active work or a business. If that income stream stops, they could lose everything overnight.

They often spend everything they earn to maintain a luxurious lifestyle and appear rich—and this becomes the Achilles’ heel of their lives. That’s why, when the economy takes a downturn, you see so many luxury homes suddenly listed for sale. Their owners have no savings and no passive income streams to cover even basic living expenses during tough times, not even for the short period it takes for the economy to recover.

Financially free people, on the other hand, live below their means. Because they’ve built multiple passive income sources, an economic crisis doesn’t shake them. Many of them live in modest rental apartments and drive simple cars—while quietly owning several properties that generate rental income. They don’t look rich, but they have something that many of the so-called rich do not: freedom and peace of mind.

If you live in a house and know that you wouldn’t be able to pay the mortgage if the economy declines or your business slows down—and this fear constantly lingers in your mind, preventing you from enjoying life—then you are not a free person. You are a slave to the fake lifestyle you’ve built just to appear rich.

Therefore, achieving financial freedom requires a truly exceptional person with a unique mindset and personality. It doesn’t require a genius—many geniuses still struggle with their financial needs. What it does require is a disciplined and consistent person who knows their goal and moves toward it slowly but surely, without losing sight of it along the way. At the same time, as such a person begins their journey toward financial freedom, the path itself continues to develop and improve them. With every step forward, they gain a deeper level of mindfulness—what I often refer to as a higher level of consciousness.

That’s why the title of this article says that achieving financial freedom isn’t just about wealth—it’s about who you become. It’s about transforming into someone more aware, more conscious than the average person. That’s what makes the journey so rewarding. Because by achieving financial freedom, not only will you become financially secure, but you’ll also grow into an exceptional individual with rare qualities. So even if financial freedom alone doesn’t motivate you, becoming that kind of person should. And to become that person, the journey toward financial freedom is essential.

How?

In many of my articles, I have explained the steps toward achieving financial freedom (e.g. here and here). I recommend reading those articles from time to time to keep your goal and the steps toward it fresh in your mind.

The process is very simple: First, consistently generate active income through a job or business. Then, save a portion of that income each month until you’re able to start your first passive income project. After that, repeat the process—continue earning, saving, and starting new passive income projects—until your passive income not only covers all your needs and expenses but also allows you to save even more to start additional passive income streams.

It sounds simple, and it truly is. However, it requires some qualities that set you apart from those who are not on the path to financial freedom. In this article, I’d like to focus on these qualities because, as mentioned, I’ve already discussed the steps in detail in other articles.

To keep this article concise, here are two of the most important qualities. I’ll cover the others in future articles.

1. Enjoy the Journey

This is the most important factor that keeps you focused and consistent. If you constantly remind yourself that financial freedom is something you desperately need but don’t yet have, the journey toward it can feel too difficult—and there’s a high chance you’ll either stop or stray from the right path.

If you’re always thinking only about the outcome, you’re continually reminding yourself that you haven’t reached it yet and that it’s a long journey ahead. As a result, you might lose motivation, shift your focus, or try to take shortcuts—only to end up getting trapped or off course.

Instead of obsessing over the destination, focus on and enjoy the journey. This mindset will make your life much easier. You’ll start to enjoy every step of the process—knowing that each step is bringing you closer to a meaningful goal: financial freedom. When it finally arrives, it will be a welcome reward. But until then, it’s okay—because you’re still enjoying the journey.

Always remember that you don’t want to achieve financial freedom just for the sake of being financially free. As I mentioned above, the process itself is even more important than the outcome because it helps improve and develop you—your personality, your mindset, and your mindfulness.

If you obsessively remind yourself that you’re not financially free yet—and worry about whether you ever will be—you create resistance and stress around the process and the journey. None of the extremely successful legends, like Warren Buffett, ever focused on becoming multibillionaires or the richest in the world. They simply focused on and enjoyed the steps and the process, and eventually found themselves at the top.

If you enjoy the journey, you’ll reach the destination too—because you’re following what you enjoy. But if you constantly torture yourself by thinking about how far you still have to go, you’re more likely to give up.

2. Become a Little Better Every Day

You don’t have to—and you shouldn’t—compete with others on the journey to financial freedom. Your only competitor is yourself. Just aim to become a little better every day. Work a little more, and do it a little better each day. Forget about how others are doing it—their journey and mission may be completely different from yours.

Numbers prove this best. If you stay the same every day for a year—365 days—you’ll end up exactly where you were:

1365 = 1

But if you improve by just 1% each day, you’ll be 37.78 times better after a year:

1.01365 = 37.78

And if you reach a point where it feels impossible to improve even by 1% more each day, don’t stop or slow down. Just maintain your momentum—and keep going. Everything can seem difficult at the beginning. However, if you persist, it becomes easier as you move forward. That’s exactly how the journey to financial freedom works. If you keep moving, you’ll gradually master the process, and not only will it become easier, but it will also yield greater results. Once you establish multiple sources of passive income, you can even stop your active job or business and rely entirely on your passive income—not only to cover your living expenses and needs but also to fund the creation of even more passive income streams. Isn’t that amazing? Your patience and consistency will eventually pay off, and you’ll become financially free—able to lead and help others achieve the same.
