I have two different scenarios I have gotten the opportunity to see firsthand:
- Stealing information- Years ago my husband’s boss was indicted for corporate crimes. The investigating team was trying to find links to anyone else that was involved so they were taking peoples trash to try to find incriminating documents, our trash was among those.
- I work with multifamily housing units. One of the families we house go through dumpsters to find items they can break down and sell. For example- a mattress, they will dismantle it and sell the metal springs, they sell cans, all electronics get separated and components sold separately. The whole family does this and this is what they live off of.
It’s very interesting to see everyone’s perspective on this and its nice to see everyone posting so many positive thoughts about why people look through trash.

Many people look for items they can refurbish or restore, and keep for themselves or to sell at flea markets. What someone considers trash may be useful to someone else!

Most folks who go through the trash bins do so because dumpster diving is now a thing.Some folks actually find things they need. After all the saying states,One man’s trash is another one’s treasure.

People who are looking for anything that is of value to them that they do not have to pay for. They either sell the items for money or keep for themselves.
