Mirages do appears on tarmac roads on very hot sunny day. You may see a place like a pool water at a distance while walking beside the road. In the real sense, there isn’t a pool at that point.
It is caused by hot air near the road and less hot air above it creates a gradient in the refractive index of the air and so making a virtual image of the sky appear to be on or below the road.

Optical phenomenon and the hot water heats the air directly above it, making it less dense and causing the water to appear fake.
