When you break off into your own family, your spouse and children become your top priority.
However, this can change once parents start to get older and need more assistance. I know my time will come to take care of my parents in years to come (no siblings) and my priorities will shift. I also hope that my children will be old enough to be self sufficient so I can divide my time between them and my parents.
All that said, respect for your parents should always be a must.
