Mine is ‘ The Fountainhead’ by Ayn Rand…This book changed my perspective of life and people. It made me look back at all that i thought i had learnt over the past 18 years. It is a beautifully written masterpiece which i would recommend to readers of all age groups. Its success is evident due to the fact that it remains relevant to this day and will continue to be relevant in the future. It describes the struggle of one man to rise above the society’s prejudices . A society which does not accept him or his genius. An ignorant society which hinders his progress and tries its best to prevent him from reaching his destiny. It describes the eternal fight – between individualism and collectivism. The man is Howard Roark. All men strive to be him. Will the world ever see a Howard Roark. He made me rethink, reflect and redesign myself. The beauty of the book lies in the fact that the author has created not one but 5 compelling characters who depict the different characters that we encounter daily. An architect at the top of the field. The reader feels his pain as he realizes that he compromised his morals trying to gain acceptance in the society. No one wants to be the architect but most humans resemble him in character. Two men who are after power but follow different paths. Hell bent on destroying each other, they recognize the genius of Howard Roark but while one befriends him , the other nearly destroys him. Finally , a beautiful young woman caught in the storm that is ‘ THE FOUNTAINHEAD’ . Rather than wait out the storm , she goes head to head with the eye of the storm. No man could truly satisfy her barring Howard Roark. Her explosive love affair forms an intriguing (if somewhat dark) subplot . A book which is one of a kind , describing the society we live in. We never take time out from our lives to analyse ourselves or the people we interact with. However , i would recommend everyone to take some time out and read ‘THE FOUNTAINHEAD’.
