Both can hurt deeply, but in most real-life situations being ignored hurts more than being lied to.
Here’s why that tends to be the case for the majority of people:
Being ignored usually hits harder because:
It directly attacks your sense of existence and worth
“You’re not even worth the effort of a lie”
“You’re not significant enough to respond to”
That message lands in a more primal place than most lies do.
It triggers social rejection pain, which neuroscience shows activates very similar brain regions as physical pain (anterior cingulate cortex + insula).
Being ghosted, stonewalled, or given the silent treatment often produces longer-lasting emotional pain than discovering a deliberate lie.
Lies at least acknowledge your existence — someone thought you were important enough to deceive, to manage, to keep in the relationship/game/story.
Being ignored says the opposite: you’re irrelevant.
Ignoring frequently continues over time (days, weeks, months of silence), which allows rumination to compound the injury.
A lie is usually a discrete event — once you discover it, the pain can start to shift toward anger, grief, or closure. Silence just keeps bleeding.
When being lied to can actually hurt more
There are exceptions where the lie causes more pain:
The lie destroys core trust in someone you deeply depended on (spouse/parent/best friend about something identity-shaping: infidelity, terminal illness of a child, sexual orientation, addiction, criminal behavior, etc.)
The lie wasted years of your life (financial, emotional, reproductive years)
You were publicly humiliated because of the lie
The lie confirmed your worst abandonment wound (“I’m only lovable if I’m being deceived / if they’re pretending”)
Quick comparison most people report

Being deliberately lied to
7–9/10
Betrayal, anger, foolishness
Medium–long (weeks–years)
Being completely ignored
8–10/10
Worthlessness, invisibility
Long–very long (months+)
Ghosted after deep connection
9–10/10
Rejection + confusion
Often longest of all
Bottom line for most people, most of the time:
Being ignored feels more like erasure.
Being lied to feels more like injury.
And for the human nervous system, erasure usually cuts deeper than injury — because injury still means you mattered enough to be targeted.
Which one hurts you more usually depends on your personal history — especially whether your core wound is more about rejection/invisibility or betrayal/deception.
What’s your experience been? Which one has left the bigger scar for you?
Being lied to hurts me most
Being ignored hurts most from someone you love

You are right, lies are not good, thanks for your response
