If I could pick anywhere in the world to live for a full year right now (March 2026), I’d go with Lisbon, Portugal.
It’s got that perfect mix of what makes a place feel alive without being overwhelming: stunning light, hills dotted with colorful tiled buildings, the ocean nearby, incredible food (fresh seafood, pastéis de nata, and those wine bars that stay open late), and a genuinely welcoming vibe toward newcomers and remote workers. The weather is mild year-round—rarely too cold or brutally hot—and you get four proper seasons without extremes.
Portugal has been a top spot for expats and digital nomads for years, with solid infrastructure, fast internet, and that famous digital nomad visa still going strong. Lisbon itself feels like a sweet spot between big-city energy (great coworking scenes, live music, art galleries) and easy escapes (Sintra’s fairy-tale forests, Cascais beaches, or quick trains to Porto). Cost of living is reasonable compared to most Western European capitals, especially if you’re coming from somewhere like the US, UK, or Scandinavia.
A year there would give me time to really sink into the rhythm: morning coffee in Alfama, working with a view of the Tagus River, weekend surf trips or hiking in Arrábida, and evenings wandering Bairro Alto or catching fado in a tiny spot. Plus, it’s centrally located in Europe for easy weekend hops to Spain, Morocco, or other parts of the continent.
If I wanted something completely different (tropical island life, say), Bali or Chiang Mai would be strong contenders, but for a balanced, beautiful, culturally rich year, Lisbon wins for me.
What about you—where would you pick for your dream year, and why? 😊
