In a world where technology has made it easy to shop or spend,I think the most effective way to save is to remove the choice entirely. Treat your savings like a non-negotiable bill, set up a standing order that moves a specific amount to a separate savings account the same day your income arrives.
Out of Sight, Out of Mind: Use a high-yield savings account at a different bank than your primary one. If you don’t see the balance every time you check your checking account, you’re less likely to “borrow” from it.
My take
If I’m tempted to buy things I don’t need, I do wait for a day or two and usually I’m over it and don’t buy. I also think about how much I would save if I don’t spend $10 or $20 a month on something that’s not necessary. Over a year’s time I could save hundreds! By putting some thought in it I talk myself out of buying things I just want but don’t need.
