Overthinking is the tendency to dwell excessively on thoughts, problems, or situations, often replaying them repeatedly in your mind. This mental habit can lead to heightened stress, anxiety, and indecision, as it makes even simple tasks or decisions feel overwhelming. Overthinking hampers our performance by distracting us from the present moment and draining mental energy that could be used productively. It often results in procrastination, fear of failure, and missed opportunities, as we become trapped in a cycle of analysis instead of taking action. This can significantly impact both personal and professional growth, leading to decreased productivity and emotional exhaustion.
How to Beat Overthinking in 3 Minutes
1. The problem is rarely the problem.
Most of our problems aren’t actual problems. The way we think about them is the real issue. 99% of the harm is caused in our heads, by our own thoughts. The majority of the problem stems from how we think and perceive things.
2. Avoid self-rejection.
Believe that you deserve good opportunities and pursue them. Trust that you can succeed, and take action regardless of doubt. Never let overthinking lead you into self-rejection.
3. Silence and time.
Most problems can’t be solved with more thinking. We will find most of the answers we’re looking for in silence, with time, and a clear mind. If we can’t solve a problem, we must stop trying—at least for a while—and then attempt to solve it again.
4. The power of now.
We’re not going to overthink our way to a better future or a better past. All we have is now, and what we do with NOW can make right our past and improve our future.
5. Fact-check your own thoughts.
Our thoughts create scenarios in our minds that reflect our insecurities, fears, and worries. So, it’s important to always fact-check our own thoughts before accepting them.
6. Acceptance is peace.
No amount of anxiety will change our future, and no amount of anxiety will change our past. Peace is found in acceptance. We must accept imperfection, uncertainty, and uncontrollable things.
