A relationship with God, from my perspective, is important because it shapes how people actually live out their faith. It provides identity, guides daily decisions, nurtures moral character, offers healing and hope, strengthens community life, and motivates acts of love and justice. The reasons are endless but nothing beats knowing one’s essence and reason for existence
The importance of a relationship with God is something that has been described in very different ways depending on the spiritual tradition, personal experience, and stage of life a person is in. Here are the most commonly mentioned reasons people across many faiths (especially Christianity, but also in Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and personal spirituality) consider it profoundly important:
1. It answers the deepest identity question: “Who am I really?”
A relationship with God gives you an origin story that is not random or accidental.
You are not just biology + culture + trauma + achievements.
You are seen, known, and wanted by the source of existence itself.
Many people say this single realization removes a huge amount of inner pressure and identity crisis.
2. It provides an unchanging anchor in a constantly changing world
Jobs, health, relationships, money, reputation, countries — all of them can disappear or radically change.
A living relationship with God is frequently described as the one reality that does not depend on your performance, age, location, or how well life is going.
When everything else is shaking, people often report that this connection becomes the only stable ground left.
3. It gives a source of love that is not earned or fragile
Human love (even the best kind) is usually conditional to some degree:
“I love you if you stay attractive / successful / kind / faithful…”
A relationship with God is often experienced as the only love that says:
“I loved you before you did anything right, and I will still love you when you do everything wrong.”
For many this is the first time they experience unconditional acceptance at the deepest level.
4. It changes how you deal with guilt, shame, and failure
Without God, most people are left carrying their own moral debt forever — or pretending it doesn’t exist.
A real relationship with God usually includes forgiveness that is both complete and unrepeatable (you don’t have to keep earning it).
This frequently leads to people becoming less judgmental toward others, more able to forgive, and less crushed by their own past.
5. It gives purpose that survives success and failure
Most human purposes eventually run out of fuel:
→ Career goals get achieved (or blocked)
→ Kids grow up and leave
→ Beauty and strength fade
A relationship with God usually comes with a sense of eternal meaning — that your life is part of a bigger story that doesn’t end when your body does.
6. It changes how you face death
Almost everyone fears death at some level.
A lived relationship with God very often transforms that fear into something much smaller — sometimes even into hope or peace.
Many people say they stopped being terrified of dying only after they became convinced that:
They are not going into nothingness
They are going toward Someone who already knows them completely and loves them anyway
7. It often makes people become better humans (slowly, imperfectly)
Not because they are trying to “earn” God’s love, but because they are loved and want to reflect that love.
Common changes people report:
More patience
Less need to control others
More willingness to serve without being seen
Ability to love difficult people longer
In short — the most common answers people give:
A relationship with God matters because it answers the questions human beings suffer with most:
Am I really loved — no matter what?
Does my life ultimately mean anything?
Can I be forgiven for the things I can’t forgive myself for?
Is there anyone who will never leave?
What happens after I die?
For those who experience it as real, the relationship with God is not primarily about rules, religion, or even morality —
it’s about being intimately known and completely loved by the One who made everything, and letting that reality slowly reshape everything else.
What is your own take on this question? Are you asking from personal searching, from curiosity, or maybe from seeing how it affects someone close to you?
My relationships with God brings wisdom, clarity and moral compass. It gives me faith and hope, faith doesn’t remove challenges but it gives me strength to bear them. Walking with God has helped to shape my character, teaches me love, humility, patience and forgiveness. When you have a healthy relationship with God, there’s this inner peace you enjoy.
My relationship with God helps me feel supported throughout all my other worldly relationships. I believe in the power of communicating with God, telling him what’s on your mind, asking questions, asking for signs and bettering our hearts and minds. I believe in walking towards this devine power and not away. I say this because, when I communicate with God, when I truly open my heart to God, I feel a shift in myself. I feel more centered, more peaceful, more loving, more organized and lighter. Active communication with God purifies the soul. Active questions receive active answers. This is how I choose to live my life, believing that I have got all the tools and materials to live it. Not only the guidance of other humans but the guidance of a power that is far greater and more intelligent and that proved to be by my side when I needed that guidance and help.
