Steps to Sell Physical Products in Online Auctions

Selling physical products in online auctions can be both enjoyable and profitable. It’s a great way to declutter and make some extra money by parting with items you no longer need. However, for many vendors, it evolves into a lucrative business that generates substantial profits. A significant number of individuals who initially engaged in online auctions to dispose of unwanted items stumbled upon a profitable business opportunity.

Whether you are looking to sell something you don’t need or considering entering the online auction business, this article can guide you through the process. LuckScout Auctions makes it exceptionally easy to get started, and you can apply to sell your items on this platform. This article will provide valuable insights to help you initiate the process seamlessly.

1. Your Physical Product

Assuming you already have a physical product you wish to sell in an online auction, as mentioned earlier, it might be an item you no longer need but want to monetize. If you don’t currently possess such a product but aspire to experience selling in online auctions, the initial step involves purchasing a physical product at the lowest possible price. The market offers countless options, but it’s crucial to select something in demand and likely to attract bids. In this article, I’ve discussed trending and popular antiques commonly sought after in online auctions, such as the coins showcased in my auctions, here and here to demonstrate how members can engage in this process.

However, the choice is not limited to antiques and vintage items. Feel free to choose any product, ensuring it’s acquired at a reasonable cost and has potential market appeal.

Your Purchase Price

The purchase price plays a pivotal role in ensuring a profitable outcome at the conclusion of your auction. Acquiring your product at a high cost and initiating the auction with an equally high starting price can dissuade potential bidders, as it may already be perceived as expensive. Even if bids do come in, the profit margin may not be substantial. For instance, had I purchased the coins I am currently selling (here and here) for $500 each, well above their regular market value, potential buyers would likely be deterred by the inflated starting bid. People can easily research and identify the typical price range for items in online auctions, and if your prices are deemed unreasonable, bidding interest may wane. Therefore, it is advisable to procure items at reasonable prices and commence your online auction with a corresponding starting bid to attract potential buyers.

Your Start Bid

The objective of your auctions is not necessarily to conclude with substantial profits; a reasonable profit should suffice for satisfaction. As mentioned earlier, it’s crucial to maintain reasonable prices to encourage active participation and bidding. Initiate your auction with a modest starting bid, allowing ample time for potential bidders to engage, follow the auction, and make thoughtful bids. For instance, if you acquired an item for $45, consider starting the auction with a maximum bid of $45 (unless this amount is exceptionally low for the item, justifying a higher starting bid). Provide the auction with an extended timeframe, perhaps more than 24 hours, such as a week, to unfold.

As previously outlined, there are instances where you secure a valuable item at an exceptionally low price, such as purchasing a $200 coin for $50. In such cases, it’s reasonable to start the auction at a higher price, like $100. Even a few bids in this scenario can yield a satisfactory profit.

It’s important to note that starting an auction with a bid lower than your purchase price may result in losses. While some sellers adopt this strategy, anticipating active bidding to raise the price, it doesn’t always pan out, leading to potential losses. If you wish to minimize the risk of loss, avoid starting auctions with a bid lower than your purchase price. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that not every auction will yield a profit. If you choose to initiate auctions below your purchase price, be prepared for the possibility of losses, as the outcome is influenced by the unpredictable reactions of potential bidders.

Your Product Quality

The success of your online auctions is closely tied to the quality of the products you choose to sell. This principle applies even to antique and vintage items, which should possess good quality unless they are exceptionally rare, such as a valuable painting or coin that, due to its rarity, commands attention despite some physical imperfections. For instance, vintage coins that remain uncirculated and, therefore, appear cleaner and newer, generally fetch higher prices compared to their counterparts from the same year that have been circulated, scratched, or damaged. In essence, not all antique and vintage items are suitable for selling in online auctions.

To enhance your chances of success, invest your money in acquiring items with good quality, low prices, and favorable conditions. This strategy will contribute to a higher success rate in your online auctions.

Equally crucial is the presentation of your product on the auction page, emphasizing the need for high-quality photos. These images should clearly convey the item’s quality. If possible, consider incorporating videos into your listings, as demonstrated in two of my auctions (here and here), to provide potential buyers with a more comprehensive view of the product.

Comprehensive Description

Providing a comprehensive description of physical products in online auctions is crucial for fostering trust, transparency, and informed decision-making among potential buyers. A detailed and accurate product description ensures that buyers have a clear understanding of the item’s condition, specifications, and features, reducing the risk of misunderstandings or disputes. Key information to include encompasses the product’s dimensions, brand, model, age, and any relevant details about its condition, such as any wear and tear or damage. Additionally, highlighting unique selling points, including accessories or additional features, can enhance the perceived value of the product. By offering a thorough and honest representation of the item, sellers contribute to a positive online shopping experience, building credibility and encouraging repeat business.

Dimensions

It is highly recommended to provide detailed information about the dimensions and weight of your products on the auction pages. Moreover, including details about the material is essential, saving customers from the need to search for this information independently. In my coin auctions, I specify details such as the composition of a Morgan Dollar, which is 90% silver and 10% copper, with a diameter of 38.1 millimeters.

As an illustrative example for this article, I have chosen a different item from the auctions I have conducted on this site thus far—a vintage China saucer and cup. I have selected this item because it aligns with the conditions outlined in this article. Despite being a used item likely from the 1930-60 period, it is in excellent condition with no damage.

In the accompanying pictures below, I have endeavored to provide high-quality images, with one of them clearly displaying the dimensions (diameter).

I have initiated an auction for this item to demonstrate the ideal format for your auction pages when selling physical products. Click here to visit my auction page. Feel free to place a bid if you are interested in acquiring this vintage saucer and cup.

2. Shipping Fees

Your customers should know in advance how much they must pay for shipping if they win your auctions. Therefore, it is essential to include the exact shipping fee on each online auction page. Clearly explain whether there is a fixed shipping fee for all countries or cities, or if there are different fees for each country or city. Specify to which countries or cities you will ship the item so that only those in those regions participate in the auction and bid.

Alternatively, you can choose to include the shipping fee in the price for simplicity. However, even in this case, you must communicate on the online auction page, from the beginning of the auction, that participants won’t have to pay anything for shipping in addition to the price if they win.

Fortunately, LuckScout allows you to opt for any of these options.

3. Ethics

The decision to bid and purchase your items lies with the customers. They are the ones who should determine whether your product is worth their money. Our role is to provide excellent service, respect their decisions, and acknowledge their judgments. Having dissatisfied customers can harm your reputation and impact your business, as negative reviews can easily be posted on your store page(s) online, deterring others from making purchases.

Personally, I prefer to incur a loss or even give something away for free rather than having angry and upset customers. If a customer is unhappy even after receiving the product, I am willing to cover the return shipping costs, send a replacement, or even allow them to keep the initial product and send another one for free to ensure their satisfaction. Having millions of happy customers who trust you is invaluable, and even a single unhappy customer who loses trust is one too many. No amount of money can compare to the happiness, satisfaction, and positive feedback received from customers after making a purchase.

Once your auction ends and the winner pays, you must ship the item immediately and provide the tracking information. On LuckScout, we don’t release the vendor’s funds before ensuring that the customer has received the order. In case a vendor doesn’t ship, we will refund the customer’s money and will address the vendor according to the terms and conditions. LuckScout has always been and will always be a safe and healthy environment for everyone, especially customers.
