The Best and Most Important Time to Work Even Harder Is When You Feel Like Quitting

You feel like quitting when you’re not getting any results after a period of struggle. This is exactly when most people give up. However, that very moment is also when those determined to succeed push even harder because they know that getting no results—and feeling like quitting because of it—is the first and most significant obstacle they must overcome to succeed. This is something most people don’t understand. They believe they should see results from the first day or within a short time.

Two quotes always come to mind when I face no results in a project and feel like quitting. The first is by the legendary Winston Churchill known for his intelligence, wisdom, and political prowess:

If you’re going through hell, keep going.

This is exactly what Churchill did when they were on the brink of losing World War II to Hitler, who had declared that if they won, they would subjugate and conquer the British. If it weren’t for Churchill’s resilience—which eventually convinced the United States to support Europe—Hitler might have succeeded. I explored a small part of the miracle of Churchill’s intelligence and persistence in an article I published on LuckScout some time ago: Winston Churchill: A Genius Who Invented Victory

The other quote is often attributed to motivational speakers and personal development coaches, but it doesn’t have a definitive source. It’s more of a general motivational principle that emphasizes consistency and persistence, regardless of the results you’re seeing at the moment. If someone wants to succeed in anything, this one simple quote is enough:

No results? Keep working!
Bad results? Keep working!
Good results? Keep working!

No results? Keep working!

It’s easy to feel discouraged when you put in the effort but don’t see the results you hoped for. In these moments, most people are tempted to slow down or quit altogether, believing their hard work is in vain. However, it is exactly at this point—when nothing seems to be happening—that the foundation for future success is being laid.

When you’re not seeing results, it doesn’t mean progress isn’t happening. Growth is often invisible at first. Think of a seed planted in the ground. It spends weeks beneath the soil, where no one can see the roots forming. But beneath the surface, it’s establishing itself, gathering strength to eventually break through and flourish. Your efforts are like that seed. Even when results aren’t visible, you’re developing the habits, resilience, and knowledge necessary for success.

Success doesn’t always come immediately, and it’s easy to forget that the most meaningful achievements often require time and patience. When the results aren’t coming, the key is to keep showing up and putting in the work, because every step forward—even if it feels small—is moving you closer to your goal. The moment you stop is the moment you lose the potential for all the progress you’ve made to blossom into something greater.

Bad results? Keep working!

Facing bad results can be frustrating, even disheartening. When your hard work seems to backfire or lead to setbacks, the natural reaction is to question whether it’s worth continuing. But the truth is, bad results are not failures—they’re lessons. They reveal what doesn’t work and provide crucial feedback for improvement. This is why, when things go wrong, it’s essential to keep working.

Bad results are not a signal to stop; they’re a sign that you’re in the process of learning and refining. Every misstep brings you closer to finding the right path. Thomas Edison famously said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Like Edison, those who persevere through bad results eventually find success because they continue to adjust and improve based on what they’ve learned.

The key is to view bad results as part of the journey, not the end of it. Each mistake or setback is a stepping stone, an opportunity to build resilience, sharpen your skills, and better understand your craft or goal. The people who ultimately succeed are the ones who embrace these moments as part of their growth. When you face bad results, keep working—not because the outcome is guaranteed, but because you are building the foundation for eventual success through persistence and adaptation.

Good results? Keep working!

Achieving good results is an exciting and rewarding experience. It feels like validation of your hard work and dedication. However, good results can also lead to complacency if you’re not careful. It’s easy to slow down or celebrate too early, thinking you’ve already made it. But the truth is, success is not a final destination—it’s a continuous journey. When you see good results, that’s when you need to keep working even harder.

Good results are a sign that your efforts are paying off, but they’re also a reminder that there’s more to achieve. The people who truly excel in life and business don’t stop when things are going well; they double down and push further. They know that success is built on momentum, and if you stop working when you start seeing progress, you risk losing that momentum. What got you here won’t necessarily get you to the next level—continuous effort and improvement will.

Every good result should be a reminder that there’s still more potential to unlock, more goals to reach, and more growth to experience. Keep working not because you’re not satisfied, but because success thrives on consistency and continuous action. The journey doesn’t end when you achieve something great—that’s just the beginning. Keep striving, keep refining, and keep pushing your limits, because your best days are still ahead if you stay committed to the process.

The Turning Point: When Quitting Feels Right, Keep Going

The most critical moment in anyone’s journey toward success is not when things are going smoothly, but when everything feels like it’s falling apart. It’s when you’re tired, frustrated, and on the verge of giving up that the opportunity to grow the most presents itself. Most people give up at this point because it’s easier to walk away than to push through the pain of failure or stagnation. However, this is exactly when you should work even harder—when quitting feels like the most tempting option.

It’s in these moments of struggle that you’re actually building the resilience and strength needed to succeed in the long run. Just as the darkest hour comes before dawn, the most difficult times often come right before a breakthrough. If you give up when things get tough, you’ll never see the progress that was just around the corner. But if you keep going, pushing harder even when results seem distant or negative, you’ll be setting yourself apart from the crowd. The most successful people aren’t those who never face challenges—they’re the ones who keep moving forward no matter what.

The best and most important time to work even harder is when you feel like quitting because that’s when growth happens. It’s easy to stay motivated when everything is going well, but real success is built when you refuse to give up in the face of adversity. The journey may be long and difficult, but every step you take in these tough times brings you closer to your goal. Don’t let temporary setbacks or moments of doubt define your future. Keep working, keep pushing, and you’ll discover that persistence is the key that unlocks the doors to success.
