Through my journey in life, I was one to always helped the needs of others before me. When I kept doing that, I saw myself falling more behind in what I was supposed to accomplish. However, through research and studying, I found that I am the most important person, and if I cannot work on my needs and satisfy my needs, then I cannot accomplish my goals due to diverting my attention to the needs of others. What are your thoughts?
You have to take care of yourself because if you don’t how can you take care of others
You’re welcome
Although I believe, God desire us to be a blessing to others through helping those in need. However, one must first learn how to properly take care of self-first. Then, you will be able to be a blessing to others.
Amen to that Alexis! Thank you for your feedback!
You are welcome Iris!
You can’t pour from an empty cup. If you’re emotionally, mentally, or physically drained, you can’t truly help others.
Self-care builds resilience—making you stronger, more compassionate, and more capable.
Neglecting yourself can lead to burnout, resentment, or even health issues.
But Here’s the Balance:
Self-care isn’t selfish—it’s foundational.
Taking care of your needs doesn’t mean ignoring others. It just means you set healthy boundaries, so your giving is sustainable and not self-destructive.
Valery, your response encompasses every valid reason why we humans must take care of our needs first and takes priority over anything else. Your response covered every thought and expression that the rest of us who responded shared. Thank you so much for your words of wisdom!
It’s important to take care of yourself first, otherwise you get fatigued physically and mentally making it hard to give someone else sufficient care. To take good care of someone else requires that you take care of yourself first!
I appreciate your feedback Teresa. I totally agree with you. We must help ourselves first before helping anyone else.
You’re welcome Iris I hope you’re having a wonderful day!
Probably it is more important, but I generally take care of everyone else before myself. I reach burnout stage and just keep going. This doesn’t help my anxiety levels at all, but it’s just how I have been my entire life.
Hi Dawn. Thank you for your feedback. Have you read the other answers to this question? I believe that they would help. I have learned the hard way that taking care of self must come first. Please read some of the other answers and I believe that they May give you other perspectives.
Oh, I understand that you should put yourself first, don’t get me wrong. I’ve just never been able to do it. I’m too much of a bleeding heart, people pleaser, and it results in burnout and severe anxiety issues. I will one day come first, but I grew up in a family that saw the value in helping others even when we were struggling. So its been engrained in me that I come second, I guess . Even after being homeless for 9 years and pulling myself out of the gutter with no help from anyone but myself, I have always helped others before myself. I can go without a meal, but I don’t know how many meals that other person has missed, or I can sleep on a hardwood floor if someone who needs a bed for comfort needs it more than I. True, it may be the wrong way of going about things, but maybe one day someone can teach this old dog new tricks.
You can’t take care of anyone else without taking care of yourself first.
I totally agree with you, David. There are so many other answers that are in alignment with your response. Thank you very much for your input.
Take care of yourself and then others
I totally agee Anna! Thanks for your feedback. Many others had similar answers to yours. I believe that is the most appropriate and logical way. As the saying goes: “We must help ourselves first before we can help others”.
In my opinion, you should always take care of yourself first (unless its a small child who can’t do for themselves). If you do not take care of you first you might not have enough in you to help anyone else.
So true Mayra! I totally agree. Unless it’s a small child or your pet who I consider family as well, and can’t take care of themselves, they need us first.
We must be selfish to a degree, you can’t look after someone else without looking after yourself first 🤍
I totally agree with you Byrony! My journey in life has taught me that lesson. And I find it’s true. Once I take care of my needs and if I can help someone else I will within my capacity. Thanks so much for your feedback!
I always remember since I was little the airline stewardess instructing us to put our oxygen on first then help others❗
You cannot help others before helping yourself❗
I love your comparison, Rhonda. That makes a lot of sense. I really appreciate and value your feedback. That is another lesson learned.

You hit it right on the nose Jacqueline. Thank you so much for your response. Enjoy your day!
