Mobile phones are called cell phones because they operate using a network of small, interconnected geographic areas called “cells.” Each cell is served by a base station (like a tower) that handles the radio signals for phones in that area. When you move, your phone switches between these cells to stay connected, a system pioneered in the 1970s by Bell Labs.
