Do people have free will to make their own conscious choices, or is life mostly predestined?

I believe that we have the free will to make our own decisions and to carve our own roads in this life The day that we were born and the day we pass on are not what we choose for ourselves.Many folks were conditioned into believing that life is something one has to accept is pre planned.However,one afternoon at school,I realized that it was a myth.I do feel that most folks could make better decisions that can impact others and the world.
