The scientific community and the vast majority of the global population believe the Earth is an oblate spheroid, which is a sphere that is slightly flattened at the poles and bulging at the equator. This is a fact supported by an overwhelming amount of evidence, including satellite photos, the observations of astronauts from space, and the predictable behavior of planetary orbits and gravity. The oldest and most fundamental evidence, however, comes from observations like the curvature of the horizon at sea and the different constellations visible from the Northern versus Southern Hemispheres.
A very small minority of people, often referred to as flat-Earthers, believe the Earth is a flat disc. This belief is not based on scientific evidence but rather on literal interpretations of certain texts, a general distrust of institutions like NASA, and a dismissal of scientific principles like gravity. Flat-Earthers propose various alternative models for the world, often claiming that the curvature of the Earth is an elaborate deception.
