In my view, forgiving is often easier than forgetting.
You can choose to forgive someone — to let go of anger and release the desire for payback — even if the memory remains. Forgiving is an act of emotional and moral strength, something you can consciously decide to do.
But forgetting is largely involuntary. Our brains are wired to remember painful or significant events as a way to protect us. You can’t easily erase a memory, especially one tied to strong emotion.
So, while forgiving takes effort and empathy, forgetting is often beyond our control. That’s why you might forgive someone but still remember what happened.
