The main dish at medieval Christmas feasts was often a roasted boar’s head, symbolizing wealth, bravery, and celebration. It was richly decorated and carried into the hall with great ceremony, sometimes accompanied by music. In grand feasts, nobles might also enjoy roast goose, swan, or peacock, sometimes re-dressed in their feathers for dramatic display. These meals were far more than food—they were a show of power and generosity. For common people, however, the main dish was simpler, often pottage or whatever meat could be afforded. Medieval Christmas was a time when food, status, and tradition came together at the table. 🍗✨
