Change threatens familiarity. Even when situations are unhealthy, they are predictable. The human brain prefers certainty over improvement because certainty feels safe.
Fear of the unknown is powerful. Change requires letting go of identity, routines, and comfort. It demands adaptation, which consumes energy and emotional resources.
Change also exposes vulnerability. Trying something new risks failure and judgment. Staying the same avoids that risk.
Habits reinforce resistance. The brain conserves energy by repeating familiar patterns. Breaking habits requires conscious effort.
Emotional attachments also hinder change. People may cling to identities tied to past experiences, even when those identities no longer serve them.
Despite resistance, change becomes inevitable when discomfort outweighs fear. Growth begins when pain of staying the same exceeds pain of change.
