Others quietly hold people back.

I think the most common lie is we tell ourselves is we will improve in some drastic way. We’ll lose weight, achieve some huge goal, and we WILL be successful!
It’s a comforting thing to say: new year, new me. New year, fresh start. And it’s a great mindset to start with, but we soon forget that once the first couple weeks of January pass. And we realize we still have another 50 weeks of this year.
Once we get into the thick of the first month or two, we realize how hard our goals are. The overall goal is still far off, discouragement is inevitable, and the goal is lost.
And, instead of looking at the amount of time left to us in the year, we announce “Better luck next year.”
