Do you believe conscious thoughts can in anyway be associated with dreams?

I studied Dream Theology in school and one teacher said that Dreams are flashes of your life and sometimes previous life ( memories that we hide deep down to forget ) and that nightmares are what is to come which is directed to your personal fears.
