Documenting and handling through legal channels is always smart, if its affecting your credit, your bank account etc, going through legal channels will help you start to fix your finances if they are affected.
But exposing the bad guys is not a bad idea either, I might publicize the whole situation see if someone else has gone through it and authorities might get more useful information.
