“Follow your passion” sounds inspiring… but is it actually good advice?
Some people say passion is the fuel that makes hard work feel easier—and that it leads to success if you stay consistent. Others say it’s a trap that keeps people dreaming, switching directions, and avoiding the boring-but-profitable skills that actually build a stable life.
So what do you think?
Is “follow your passion” a smart life strategy… or one of the biggest traps?
And if you’ve tried it: did it help you—or hurt you? 👇
Following ones passion most times could be very deadly, because the world we are in presently does not reward for passion, rather she rewards for value. This being said, our passion most times cannot alleviate us from poverty, since passion is not enough to sponsor our daily lives, I think it will be better to look out for something that pays well and create a passion for it. Passion is very important to be successful but on its own it might not bring enough food to the table. To bring enough food to the table, find a paying work and have passion for your work.
Skill beats passion In real life:
Skill + value + opportunity = income
Passion alone ≠ success
A smarter approach (better advice)
Instead of: ❌ “Follow your passion”
Try: ✅ “Build skills, create value, then let passion grow”
Or: ✅ “Follow opportunities, not just feelings”
Practical formula
A more reliable path is:
Interest + Skill + Demand + Income = Sustainable success
So:
Learn high-value skills
Solve real problems
Earn money
Then shape your work around what you enjoy
Passion often develops after mastery, not before.
Simple truth
Passion is a spark. Discipline and strategy are the fuel.
Without fuel, sparks die fast.
Having passion over something helps you have focus in what you are doing, Only if you work towards it. Having passion and dedication works together, then patience crown it all.

I’ve tried following my passion academic wise, but it was not helpful, what I rather did was looking out for a more promising course where I had greater chances of getting a job, or setting up something for myself when I graduate. I’ve built passion for this course and what keeps me going is that at the end of the day, I will be successful. Passion is very important as it keeps one going, have passion for profitable skills.
