Marrying the wrong spouse

The biggest risk in marriage relationships isn’t a single dramatic event like infidelity (though that’s serious), but rather chronic patterns of poor emotional handling and communication that erode the foundation over time.
The most robust, replicated finding from decades of relationship science (especially John Gottman’s longitudinal studies) points to contempt as the single strongest predictor of divorce. Contempt includes behaviors like eye-rolling, sarcasm, mockery, name-calling, or any communication that conveys superiority and disdain (“You always do this, you’re pathetic”). When contempt becomes a habit, it poisons respect — the core nutrient of long-term pair-bonding.
Contempt usually arrives as part of a destructive sequence Gottman calls the Four Horsemen:
Criticism — Attacking character/personality instead of complaining about a specific behavior (“You never listen” vs. “I felt ignored when…”).
Contempt — The most toxic; the #1 divorce predictor.
Defensiveness — Counter-attacking or playing the victim instead of owning part of the issue.
Stonewalling — Emotional withdrawal, shutting down, or going silent/fleeing the conversation.
When these patterns dominate interactions (especially if repair attempts fail), divorce can be predicted with over 90% accuracy in some studies.
Other major risks that show up consistently in research include:
Lack of commitment — Often cited as the top self-reported reason in surveys of divorced people (around 70-73%). This manifests as emotional disengagement, not fully investing in “us”, or keeping one foot out the door mentally.
Chronic unresolved conflict / negative sentiment override — Where small issues snowball because partners interpret neutral or positive acts through a negative lens.
Emotional disconnection / emotional neglect — More insidious than fights; the slow drift into roommates-with-kids-or-mortgage.
Major external stressors that overwhelm the relationship (financial ruin, child loss/illness, severe mental health issues, addiction), but only become lethal when the couple lacks solid friendship, respect, and repair skills.
Infidelity, money fights, and sex problems often get blamed, but they’re usually symptoms of the deeper issues above rather than root causes.
Quick protective factors (what lowers the risk dramatically)
Build and maintain a strong friendship foundation (know each other’s inner world)
Practice soft startups in conflict
Accept influence from your partner
Repair after fights quickly
Show appreciation / positivity ratio of at least 5:1 in everyday interactions
Treat contempt as an emergency — eliminate it ruthlessly
In short: The biggest risk isn’t falling out of love — it’s letting contempt and emotional withdrawal become normal. Marriages don’t usually explode; they slowly suffocate from accumulated disrespect and disconnection. The antidote is consistent, deliberate maintenance of respect, fondness, and emotional responsiveness.
Emenike,that was a deep dive.Thankyou for sharing.
Thanks for the information
When you don’t truly love the person and decides to pretend
You are correct
If you married a wrong person the home will definitely crash or if one of them get married to the next person because of money it will not last long
I think is lack of understanding, because if the two parties understand each other there will be no need of any risk of divorce
Rafat, great thought.Thankyou for sharing your opinion.
