the last time I felt truly alive was about three weeks ago, on a random Tuesday night in early February.
Iād had one of those exhausting days where everything felt mechanicalāwork, emails, small talk, autopilot. I got home late, dropped my keys on the counter, and just stood there in the dark kitchen staring at nothing. Then, for no logical reason, I put on this old playlist I hadnāt touched in yearsāstuff from when I was 19 and thought the world was going to bend to my will.
The first song hit (something raw and loud, probably The National or early Arcade Fire), and instead of turning it off like usual, I cranked it. I started pacing the living room, then jumping around like an idiot, air-drumming, singing off-key at the top of my lungs. No neighbors nearby, no one to judge. Just me, sweating, heart hammering, feeling every lyric in my chest like it was written yesterday.
What caused it wasnāt the music alone. It was the sudden, stupid realization that Iād been holding my breath for monthsāholding back joy, anger, volume, messinessābecause āadults donāt do that.ā And in that moment, I gave myself permission to be loud and ridiculous and alive again. No purpose, no productivity, just pure, reckless feeling.
I ended up on the floor laughing at myself, out of breath, grinning like a fool. For the first time in forever, my body remembered it wasnāt just here to endure. It was here to feel everything.
Thatās the last time I felt truly alive.
What about youāwhen was yours, and what cracked you open?
