I prefer the perspective from Kenya…The UAE is a rich country. Kenya is not.
I know many people prefer not to see poverty, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist. In the UAE the workers arrive crammed in buses early in the morning and are shipped off in the evening. In Kenya, you are amongst people in worse conditions all the time. And whilst this means more crime and danger, it also gives you a better sense of reality. I felt more grateful for what I had when I saw what many people did not. But in the UAE, it was the opposite. You want much more because you see much more.
If I had to choose between Dubai and Africa for a visit right now (in February 2026), I’d pick Africa—hands down. Don’t get me wrong: Dubai is incredible and one of the most polished, futuristic cities on Earth. But Africa offers something deeper, wilder, and more transformative that money and infrastructure alone can’t replicate.
Why Dubai is Tempting (and Still Awesome)
Dubai in 2026 is at peak form—it’s breaking tourism records again, welcoming around 19-20 million visitors last year and keeping the momentum going strong. It’s the ultimate “wow” destination:
Iconic sights like the Burj Khalifa (world’s tallest building), Dubai Fountain shows, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Mall (with its aquarium and indoor ski slope), and the Museum of the Future.
Luxury everywhere: ultra-modern hotels, desert safaris with dune bashing/camel rides, high-end shopping, fine dining from every cuisine, and new spots like AYA Universe immersive experiences, Sky Views, or Cloud 22 rooftop vibes.
Super convenient: year-round sunshine, easy flights, English widely spoken, top-tier safety and cleanliness, and it’s a hub for short trips or stopovers. Trends show it’s leaning into wellness retreats, cultural immersion in old souks, sustainable adventures, and tech-driven fun (air taxis, anyone?).
It’s perfect if you want glamour, convenience, and Instagram-worthy moments without much hassle. Many Africans love it as an easy escape (it’s arguably one of the most visited spots by people from the continent).
But for me personally? It’s almost too perfect—manufactured, predictable, and focused on consumption. I’ve “seen” the Burj Khalifa a thousand times in photos/videos; it’s stunning, but once you’ve done the At the Top observation deck, the desert dinner, and mall shopping, it can feel a bit… scripted.
Why Africa Wins for Me
Africa isn’t one place—it’s a massive continent with 54 countries, endless variety, and raw, soul-stirring experiences. In 2026, tourism is booming faster than anywhere else globally (up ~8% in 2025 to 81+ million visitors, outpacing the world average), with better flights, visa reforms in many spots, and a push toward sustainable/authentic travel.
The draw is nature, wildlife, culture, and adventure on a scale Dubai can’t touch:
Wildlife safaris that feel truly wild: Imagine spotting the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino) in places like South Africa’s Kruger, Kenya’s Maasai Mara, Tanzania’s Serengeti (Great Migration still happening), Botswana’s Okavango Delta (water-based safaris by mokoro canoe), or underrated gems like Zambia’s Kafue or Zimbabwe’s Hwange (fewer crowds, better value).
Landscapes that humble you: Victoria Falls thundering, the vast savannas at sunrise with hot-air balloon rides, gorilla trekking in Rwanda/Uganda, or beaches in Zanzibar/Mauritius after a safari combo.
Cultural depth: Meeting Maasai communities, exploring ancient sites in Ethiopia/Morocco/Egypt, vibrant markets, music, food, and history that connects you to humanity’s roots.
Emerging trends: More off-the-beaten-path spots (e.g., Mozambique bush + beach, Gabon for gorillas/chimps), luxury eco-lodges, walking safaris, and sustainable tourism funding conservation.
Africa feels alive and unpredictable—in the best way. You might wake up to elephants at your tent, share stories around a fire with locals, or witness something no photo can capture. It’s not always “easy” (longer travel, variable infrastructure in some areas), but the rewards are profound: awe, perspective, and memories that stick forever.
My Hypothetical Choice
If I want a quick, luxurious, high-energy escape (3-7 days): Dubai every time—reliable fun.
For a meaningful, bucket-list-level adventure (10+ days): Africa, probably starting with a classic East/Southern Africa safari (e.g., Kenya/Tanzania or South Africa + Cape Town for variety I’d choose the continent that reminds us how vast and wild the world still is. Dubai dazzles the eyes; Africa stirs the soul.
What about you—which one calls to you more, and why? Or are you thinking of a specific part of Africa (safari, beach, culture)? I’d love to help narrow it down! 🌍🕌
Wow, that very thoughtful of you. That nice from you
