Control – Many suggest the illusion is that we have full control over our lives. So much of life is shaped by chance, biology, and circumstances, yet we act as if we can fully master it.
Time – Another common interpretation is that the flow of time is an illusion. Past, present, and future are constructs, and our sense of linear progression may be deceptive.
Self – In some spiritual traditions, particularly in Buddhism, the “self” is considered the greatest illusion. Our identity—our ego, personality, and separateness—is transient and constructed.
Material permanence – We often think possessions, wealth, or status bring lasting happiness, but this is an illusion because everything external is temporary.
In essence, the “greatest illusion of life” usually refers to the mismatch between perceived reality and ultimate reality—what we cling to as real versus what truly is.
