Moses’ own father (biological)
Moses’ father was Amram, a Levite from the tribe of Levi.
He married Jochebed (his aunt, which was permitted before the Mosaic Law forbade close-kin marriages).
Together they had three children: Aaron, Moses, and Miriam.
Key verses: Exodus 6:20 — “Amram married his father’s sister Jochebed, who bore him Aaron and Moses.”
Amram lived 137 years (Exodus 6:20). He is described as a faithful man who, with Jochebed, hid baby Moses from Pharaoh’s decree to kill Hebrew boys (Hebrews 11:23).
Amram is a relatively minor character — an ordinary Levite whose greatest legacy was raising the man God would use to deliver Israel.
2. Moses as a “father figure”
Moses is sometimes called a spiritual or national “father” to the people of Israel because he:
Led them out of slavery in Egypt (the Exodus).
Received the Law (Ten Commandments) at Mount Sinai.
Guided them through the wilderness for 40 years.
Acted as mediator between God and the Israelites.
In this sense, he functioned like a founding father or shepherd to the nation, but the Bible never titles him “Father Moses.”
3. Moses’ father-in-law
This is Jethro (also called Reuel or Raguel), the priest of Midian.
Moses fled to Midian after killing an Egyptian.
He married Jethro’s daughter Zipporah.
Jethro later visited Moses in the wilderness, offered wise advice on leadership, and even sacrificed to the Lord (Exodus 18).
