*Legal & health consensus:*
– *International standard*: The UN, WHO, and UNICEF set 18 as the minimum age of marriage for girls and boys. That’s because under 18 you’re legally a child.
– *Why 18*: Brain development, education, and physical health. Marriage before 18 is linked to higher risk of dropping out of school, pregnancy complications, domestic violence, and poverty.
– *Global trend*: Most countries set 18 as the legal minimum. Some allow 16-17 with parental/judicial consent, but many are moving to ban all exceptions.
*Nigeria specifically, since you asked about Nigerian topics earlier:*
– *Child Rights Act 2003*: Sets 18 as minimum age for marriage.
– *Reality*: Not all states have adopted it. In some northern states, state law and customary/religious law still permit marriage below 18. So the legal age can vary by state.
– *Push for change*: Nigerian government and NGOs are actively campaigning to end child marriage due to health and education impacts.
*Medical view*: Girls under 18 face higher risks in pregnancy and childbirth because their bodies aren’t fully developed. Fistula, stunted growth, and maternal mortality rates are higher.
*Bottom line*: “Marriageable age” for a girl should be adulthood — 18+. Before that, she’s a child and needs protection, education, and time to mature physically and mentally.
If you’re asking because of a specific situation or cultural question, I can share resources on child protection laws and health info. Are you looking for legal info for a particular state or country?
I feel like at 18 a girl is not physically, mentally or emotionally mature enough for marriage (nor boys). Even though some girls may be, I feel like 18 as a general number for all girls to be deemed legal adults is not accurate. At 22 they would be better equipped to handle the challenges that come with being in a marriage.
