I believe the individual can to some degree, but not completely. This is where the distinction matters and where the rubber meets the road. The person can understand, sympathize with, and even feel emotionally moved by a situation they’ve never encountered personally. Human imagination, storytelling, shared emotions, and deep listening allow us to bridge the gaps between lived realities. This is how empathy works where we recognize familiar emotions such fear, hope loss, love. This holds true even in times when circumstances are familiar. There is definitely a difference between relationally connecting to the feeling and knowing the experience. Lived experience carries nuance, weight, and context that can’t be fully accessed from the outside. Someone who has not been there may grasp the outline of the struggle, but not always the depth and breadth, contradictions, or long-term impact. This is why humility matters. It exist in the space between empathy and experience where the real understanding truly begins.
