The bad weather left us stuck on the side of the road because we couldn’t even see. That was actually scary. The weather went from moderate rain to a horrible storm within minutes of leaving home. It was so bad that it was pushing my ex’s truck all over the road. We had to pull over until the weather calmed down. It was so hard to see that we didn’t even see where we had pulled over to. We saw gravel and pulled in.
You’re welcome. I am too.
“My dog wouldn’t come back inside — and I couldn’t just leave him out there!” (adorable and relatable)
“I hit every red light possible — I think the city’s traffic lights are conspiring against me.” (a little humor goes a long way)
“I was ready on time, but then I couldn’t find my keys… they were in the fridge.” (too oddly specific not to be true)
If you want something honest but still polite, a simple:
“I’m really sorry I’m late — something unexpected came up, but I’m here now and appreciate your patience.”
is often the best kind of “excuse.”

I live in New York City. It is completely acceptable to blame being late on public transport.
