Why are people say I’m sorry once they are caught doing something wrong?

By a certain age people already know and understand right from wrong. (However in my opinion having a disability of the mind can warrant for an excuse) But why do people say I am sorry once they are caught?

“sorry” is a magic word and that’s a way to take responsibility for what you know you did wrong deep down

Sometimes people say sorry even when it wasn’t their fault, just to say,
“I understand what you’re going through.

Saying sorry means “I know I did something wrong.” It shows honesty and responsibility for their actions

I think when people say sorry for wrong doing because they are caught, it shows sign of repentance and remorsefulnes. It could also be a pretence to save themselves from an ugly situation and escape justice/punishment.

Coming from my end, Sorry could come from a deep reflection, sometimes people don’t do what they because they enjoyed it. It could just be an unavoidable thing, sometimes they wish to come out already but no means to, and when caught, it becomes avenue to being free from the wrong.

An assumption though 🙈🙈
