The only thing that I could say and it’s from experience. That is, whatever the problem is, to give it to God and to really trust that he will guide them in the right direction. To reach deep down within and find the strength to let whatever it is that is troubling them and let it go. Depending on the person, they may need professional assistance. I would attempt, if they are in agreement to, would be to help locate a professional for them.
Yes and Amen!!
You are welcome!
I would let them know first that I’m always going to there for them but from my experience with this I don’t think there’s anything to really say that’s gonna help them that’s something they have to find within them selves. I would be totally honest with them in the fact that it’s probably going to be one of the hardest things they will go through because learning to love yourself unconditionally is no easy task it’s so easy to love other people but we are our own worst critics crazy but true.
You’re not alone. It doesn’t matter about the 9 year old girl who has to walks 8 miles for fresh water for her sick grand mother.
Your problems are important to you. But this little girl is not depressed because she works hard. You have to get out. Work, walk, exercise, yoga. Dwelling will not help you.
As a pysch major it would truly depend on what they were dealing with. There are a variety of things for people to be depressed about. So my first step would be to understand what is going on. I will always remind anyone that God is there but sometimes it’s more than just knowing that, that is needed. People need to know you are listening, unbiased and non-judgmental. I would give them space to freely speak. But finally I would encourage them to get professional help as needed because suffering from depression in silence is absolutely the worst thing anyone can do.
Thanks for the wonderful insight!
You’re welcome! Great question!
It can be frustrating to talk to someone in depression, but I would stay calm make sure they are calm; and if they talk too negatively I would tell the person they always have something good to live for. Talking about the problem caused the depression can help to know what can make it better to move from the problem or stop it. I’d recommend therapy online or offline in ways that don’t make the person feel crazy, but therapy making he or she feel special and friended!
I would tell them that I am right there with them and am ready to listen when they are ready to talk. I usually sit quietly and patiently until they are ready to talk; if not, I stay until they are. I’ve been there too many times to count alone, and I would never leave someone alone during their dark moments. I would also offer to cook a meal ot take their trash out, try and help in any way, shape, or form that I can.
Let them know that I can relate and understand. I would also let them know that they are not alone but I would be that shoulder to lean on and that listening ear. Not all the time a person is looking for a response or an answer but more so someone to just listen.
I would tell them that if they need to talk to someone I am here for you. BUT PLEASE DO TALK TO SOMEONE.Not talking to someone will put you in a dark place that often doesn’t end well, sometime talking to someone helps to get it off your chest and helps to let it go whatever it is or to maybe help you to find the help you need but regardless I am here and I will pray for you
Thanks for the wonderful comment!
This is a very good question. There are so many that struggle with depression everyday. Knowing exactly what to say to them all depends on the person. Them knowing that we are there for them is a big help. I think I would ask them if we could pray together or if I could pray for them. They may not know their higher power yet and maybe lack the faith of better days. I would try and relate to them and let them know my story. If god can change me then he can change anyone. Let them know that they are loved and that they mean alot to many people. Try to help them work out the reason why they are depressed. I f you cant help them maybe you have resources or know someone that can point them in the right direction. They have to know that it wont be like this all the time. Everyone has good and bad days.
This is so true! Thanks for the excellent comment!
All i can say is deprssion is a silint killer been depressed for -+1yr and thats not nice today i can tell that never give up on yourself or think that suicide is the best way out not with God on your side you can overcome depression .
Thanks so much for the wonderful comment!
Lots of love and empathy.
And lots of positivity and encouragement.
I’d invite them for walks as often as I could. It never feels like it at the time, but some exercise and getting amongst nature is a wonderful medicine. And chatting whilst strolling somewhere open and beautiful can be a very freeing way to talk.
Wether I know this person or not upon hearing about their depression and if I’m presented with the opportunity to approach them I would set aside time with them as often as I’m able and support them by remaining silent, (refrain from making suggestions or giving advice), and just listen. I’ve experienced the dark days of depression and I know this one; the people who listened the most by just sitting with me and saying very little were the ones who helped me the most.
If you know someone who is affected by depression, spend a little more time than you usually would and just listen to them and don’t speak unless you have to. Chances are they’ll figure out something they already know that they must do to beat it…. I know, I was that guy once
It is hard to say exactly what I would say, but I would let them know that I was available for them to talk to anytime they needed. One thing, I definitely wouldn’t say is something that’s so cliche and generic. Even if a cliche is true and positive, someone who is depressed and upset about things doesn’t want to hear some of those kinds of things. People don’t know exactly how they will react or respond when they’re depressed because it is such a deep state of mind.

Thanks so much Vahid!!!
